This is a detail in our local pub – The Red Lion. The owners commissioned an artist to paint portraits of eight of the craftsmen who had been involved in building the new brew house, but in the guise of ‘monks’. These amazing portraits were then reproduced on the oak panelling around the walls of the old bar area.
Not only is The Red Lion my favourite pub, but it’s also a brewery! The pub dates back to 1623 and the brewery was built on the site in 2010, brewing Slumbering Monk ale and Green Monkey craft lager. With great food too, it’s a popular stop on our walks in the area.
Damp and miserable weather meant our New Year’s Day walk didn’t get going until lunchtime, but we made up for it with a diversion to the pub. There’s nothing like a pint of Slumbering Monk at The Red Lion. What’s not to like?
